Hon. Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa

Hon. Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa was appointed as the Acting Chief Judge of Edo State on May 19, 2023, following the retirement of his predecessor, Hon. Justice Joe Acha. His appointment was confirmed by the Edo State House of Assembly on July 12, 2023, and he was sworn in as the substantive Chief Judge on July 14, 2023, by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Judicial Career and Service

Justice Okungbowa began his legal career in the Edo State Ministry of Justice, where he served with distinction, handling numerous sensitive cases. In 2001, he was appointed as a High Court Judge in Edo State and has since held various positions within the judiciary. He is recognized for his fearless, courageous, and incorruptible approach to justice, having delivered several landmark judgments that have withstood scrutiny at higher courts.

Leadership and Reforms

As Chief Judge, Justice Okungbowa has continued the judicial reforms initiated by his predecessors. He chairs the Edo State Multidoor Court (ESMDC) Governing Council, promoting alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to enhance access to justice.

In response to concerns about overcrowded correctional facilities, he has taken proactive steps, including the release of inmates during open court sessions held at custodial centers. In November 2024, Justice Okungbowa ruled that elected local government council members, including chairmen and councillors, cannot be dissolved by the state government or its agents.
