Hon. Justice Maurice A. Ikpambese

Hon. Chief Judge of Benue State

Hon. Justice Maurice A. Ikpambese was sworn in as the Chief Judge of Benue State on April 11, 2023, by then-Governor Samuel Ortom. Upon assuming office, he pledged to uphold the Constitution and enhance justice delivery and infrastructural development within the state's judiciary.

In February 2025, the Benue State House of Assembly passed a resolution recommending his removal over allegations including abuse of office, financial misconduct, political interference, and favoritism. The Assembly claimed he had overturned the state's electoral law and mismanaged judiciary funds.

However, the National Judicial Council (NJC) declared the Assembly's action unconstitutional, emphasizing that only the NJC has the authority to discipline or remove judicial officers. The NJC stated that Justice Ikpambese would remain in office pending a thorough investigation of the allegations.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) supported the NJC's stance, condemning the Assembly's move as a violation of constitutional provisions and judicial independence. The NBA warned against any attempts to appoint an acting Chief Judge without following due process.
