Hon. Justice Theresa T. Obiajulu Ogochukwu Diai was appointed as the Acting Chief Judge of Delta State on May 24, 2021, following the retirement of Hon. Justice Marshal Umukoro. Her appointment was confirmed after the recommendation by the National Judicial Council, in accordance with Section 271(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
Justice Diai's legal career is marked by dedication and a commitment to justice. She has served in various capacities within the judiciary, including as Chairman of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on the Okpe-Usobo Forest Reserve. Her leadership has been instrumental in enhancing access to justice in Delta State, with the creation of new judicial divisions and magisterial districts under her tenure.
As Chief Judge, she has emphasized the importance of integrity, accountability, and discipline within the judiciary. She continues to advocate for judicial reforms and the welfare of judicial officers in the state.
Justice Diai is also a member of the Welfare Events and Benchers Programmes Committee of the Body of Benchers, contributing to the development of the legal profession at the national level.
Her appointment as the Chief Judge of Delta State marks a significant milestone, as she is among the few women to have held this esteemed position, reflecting the progress in gender representation within the Nigerian judiciary.
