Hon. Justice Lilian Abai

Hon. Chief Judge, Abia State

Hon. Justice Lilian Abai was sworn in as the substantive Chief Judge of Abia State on May 5, 2023, by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, following her confirmation by the National Judicial Council and the State House of Assembly. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Acting Chief Judge for several months, during which her leadership was noted for positive reforms within the judiciary.

In her acceptance speech, Justice Abai expressed gratitude to the governor for adhering to constitutional provisions throughout her appointment process. She pledged to uphold her oath of office, emphasizing a commitment to the swift dispensation of justice and collaboration with the state government to enhance the judiciary's effectiveness.

Under her tenure, Justice Abai has initiated several reforms aimed at improving the judicial system in Abia State. Notably, she has been instrumental in establishing Small Claims Courts in Umuahia and Aba, with plans to extend these courts to all local government areas. These courts are designed to provide accessible and expedited legal processes for minor civil disputes.

In efforts to decongest correctional facilities, Justice Abai conducted a jail delivery exercise at the Aba Correctional Centre in March 2025, resulting in the release of two inmates and the granting of bail to 15 others with minor offenses. She emphasized the need for magistrates to be considerate in granting bail and called for diligent efforts from correctional officials to ensure timely court appearances for inmates.

Justice Abai has also focused on environmental law enforcement. In August 2024, she inaugurated 17 presiding officers and 32 members of the state's environmental sanitation court, aiming to uphold environmental laws and maintain cleanliness across Abia State.

Her leadership reflects a dedication to judicial independence, efficiency, and accessibility, striving to ensure that the judiciary serves as a pillar of justice for all
