Hon. Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu

Hon. Chief Judge, Nasarawa State

Hon. Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu was sworn in as the first female Chief Judge of Nasarawa State on April 13, 2021, by Governor Abdullahi Sule, following her confirmation by the National Judicial Council and screening by the State House of Assembly. Prior to her appointment, she served as Acting Chief Judge for over three months after the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Suleiman Umaru Dikko.

Justice Bashir-Aliyu's appointment marked a significant milestone, as she became the first woman to hold the position since the state's creation in 1996. Her tenure has been characterized by a commitment to judicial reform and the advancement of justice.

In March 2023, she signed the Rule/Practice Direction 2023, initiating the full commencement of the state's family court system, making Nasarawa the first state in Nigeria to implement such a court.

This initiative aims to provide structured legal processes for issues affecting women and children, aligning with the state's Child Rights Law of 2005.

Justice Bashir-Aliyu has also focused on decongesting custodial centers. In May 2024, she pardoned 167 inmates across five custodial centers in the state, emphasizing the importance of reviewing cases of awaiting trial inmates to ensure justice and uphold their rights.

Her leadership reflects a dedication to fairness, equity, and the continuous improvement of the legal system in Nasarawa State.
