Chief Judge, Federal High Court
Hon. Justice Joel Filibus Agya was born on November 22, 1960, in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State. He began his education at Ebenezer Primary School, Wukari (1968–1973), and proceeded to St. Paul Catholic Secondary School, Wukari (1973–1978). He attended the College of Preliminary Studies (CPS), Yola, before earning his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984 after attending the Nigerian Law School in Lagos.
Justice Agya commenced his legal career as a State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice, Gongola State (now Adamawa State) from 1985 to 1990. In 1990, he established his own law firm, J.F. Agya & Co., where he practiced until 2002. In 2002, he was appointed as a High Court Judge in Taraba State, a position he held until his elevation to Chief Judge.
He was sworn in as the substantive Chief Judge of Taraba State on January 8, 2024.
Justice Agya has been recognized for his integrity and commitment to justice. In July 2024, the Wukari Traditional Council honored him for his uprightness and impartiality in the administration of justice.
Under his leadership, the Taraba State Judiciary has undertaken significant reforms, including the establishment of a family court to handle cases related to domestic and child welfare issues. He also initiated the digitization of court proceedings to enhance efficiency in the judicial process.
Justice Agya's tenure reflects a dedication to judicial excellence, integrity, and the continuous improvement of the legal system in Taraba State.
