Hon. Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye was sworn in as the 4th substantive Chief Judge of Bayelsa State on July 13, 2023, by Governor Douye Diri, following her six-month tenure as Acting Chief Judge after the retirement of Justice Kate Abiri.
Justice Ayemieye's appointment was made in accordance with Section 271(1) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), which mandates that a state's Chief Judge be appointed by the Governor on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, subject to confirmation by the State House of Assembly.
Upon assuming office, Justice Ayemieye prioritized bringing justice closer to the people by relocating courts that had been moved to Yenagoa due to past insecurity. She emphasized the need to inspect and renovate court halls in outstation areas and enhance security to facilitate this relocation, reflecting the improved security situation in the state.
