Hon. Justice Kulu Aliyu, OFR, FNJI, is the Chief Judge of Zamfara State, Nigeria. She has been instrumental in advocating for judicial reforms and upholding the rule of law within the state.
Justice Aliyu has consistently emphasized the importance of financial autonomy for the judiciary, asserting that dependence on the executive for funding undermines judicial independence. She has called upon state authorities to adhere to constitutional provisions guaranteeing this autonomy.
In her capacity as Chief Judge, she has overseen the appointment and swearing-in of new judges to both the State High Court and the Shari’ah Court of Appeal, aiming to strengthen the judiciary's capacity and expedite the delivery of justice.
Justice Aliyu has also taken proactive steps to address prison congestion in Zamfara State. She has conducted tours of correctional facilities and has granted amnesty to inmates, particularly those held without trial or with health challenges, to decongest prisons and uphold human rights.
